Hawaii's H1N1 swine flu total rose to 21 yesterday with six more cases, including four school-age children, a preschooler and an infant.

The State Department of Health has just confirmed more cases that were found in some of Hawaii’s youngsters.

Two of the children attend Anuenue Elementary School where three cases previously were reported, including a teacher and two students, said Department of Education spokeswoman Sandy Goya.

Two other children are siblings of an Anuenue student confirmed with the flu earlier but who attend Ewa Elementary School, she said. All are recovering at home.

Ewa Elementary disinfected its campus, and letters were sent home to parents, Goya said in a news release. Anuenue is notifying parents via the school Web site, the release said.

Janice Okubo, state Health Department spokeswoman, said the other two confirmed cases reported yesterday include a preschool child who goes to a day-care program and an infant who is in household contact with a child previously confirmed with the virus.

She said the department's disease investigators are looking for close contacts of those infected and trying to determine whether there is any other exposure or risk. Anyone with symptoms related to the cases is being tested, she said.

Parents and people in contact with the cases are being informed, but schools are not being closed, she said.

Increased testing of flu symptoms also appears to be causing an increase in seasonal flu, Okubo said.

Residents are advised to continue good hygiene and stay home from work or school if they are ill.
