Art in Waikiki

Pacific Handcrafters Guild and ING Direct have teamed up to host monthly art shows in Waikiki. The shows take place at the corner of Ala Moana Boulevard and Kalakaua Avenue.

The first begins at 10 a.m. today, and repeats from the same time tomorrow.

Admission is free.

Kewalo cleanup

The Surfrider Foundation Oahu Chapter and NovusSwell magazine hosts a beach cleanup today at Kewalo Basin. Volunteers should meet at the park at 11 a.m. Call 542-4503.

Youth concert

The Hawaii Youth Symphony presents its final concert of the season tomorrow at its annual Aloha Concert Luncheon at Hilton Hawaiian Village's Tapa Ballroom. The event opens with a country store at 10:30 a.m. Lunch follows at 11:30 a.m., and the concert and program at 12:15 p.m.

Vocalist Karen Keawehawai'i joins the youth symphony for a tribute performance to 54 graduating youth symphony seniors from schools on Oahu and Kauai. Band teacher Saburo Watanabe will also be honored for his contributions to the music community.

Uke master talk

Gordon Mark shares stories about his musical education and his role as an ukulele instructor at Windward Community College's “;talk story”; series 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Paliku Theatre.

Mark has a repertoire of more than 1,000 songs, playing both jazz standards and classical pieces. He has performed as a soloist with the Honolulu Symphony and is recognized is one of the state's foremost ukulele instructors.
