Wie, Wilson in contention

Hawaii natives Michelle Wie, Dean Wilson and Tadd Fujikawa had varying degrees of success in yesterday's opening round of the LPGA's Sybase Classic in Clifton, N.J., and the PGA's Valero Texas Open in San Antonio.

Wie fired a 2-under 70 in a round that included seven birdies and five bogeys to earn a tie for 13th, eight shots off the pace. The Punahou School graduate hit only six fairways and 11 greens in regulation, averaging a healthy 270 yards off the tee. She needed 27 putts to complete her round.

Wilson also had an up-and-down afternoon, with a 3-under 67 that included seven birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey at the par-4 ninth, his closing hole. He is tied for 16th. Moanalua's Fujikawa managed only two birdies against four bogeys to sit in a tie for 100th. He'll have to go low to make the cut.

Wichmann earns fourth WAC title

Hawaii's Annett Wichmann won her fourth Western Athletic Conference heptathlon yesterday at Logan, Utah.

Wichmann scored 5,450 points during the two-day competition at Utah State.

Yesterday, Wichmann won the javelin (152 feet, 2 inches) and 800-meter run (2 minutes, 26.35 seconds) and placed second in the long jump (17 feet, 11 inches).

It was Wichmann's seventh gold medal in a WAC multi-event. She has 11 medals at indoor and outdoor championships.

UH's Emily Sheppard took the bronze with 4,701 points. She won the long jump (18 feet, 2 1/2 inches).

Goo takes Gatorade soccer award

'Iolani junior Nick Goo was announced as the Gatorade Hawaii Boys Soccer Player of the Year yesterday.

The award distinguishes Goo as Hawaii's best high school boys soccer player. Goo is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced this month.

The 5-foot-7, 125-pound forward scored nine goals and added nine assists, leading the Raiders (14-0-1) to the Division I state championship.

UH softball players make all-region

Hawaii softball players Tanisha Milca, Stephanie Ricketts and Amanda Tauali'i were chosen to the All-West Region team yesterday.

Milca, a right fielder, led UH with a .353 average and had team highs in runs (40), hits (61) and doubles (10).

Ricketts, a pitcher and the Western Athletic Conference freshman of the year, went 21-9 with a 1.87 ERA. She also had two no-hitters.

Tauali'i, a first baseman, led the Rainbow Wahine in triples (3), home runs (15), RBIs (37), slugging percentage (.745) and total bases (111).

UH's Fab Five to sign autographs

The Hawaii basketball team's starting five from the early 1970s—the Fabulous Five—will sign autographs at a car show on Sunday.

Dwight Holiday, John Pennebacker, Jerome Freeman, Bob Nash and Al Davis will appear at the 17th annual Mustang Madness and All Ford Car Show at Mike McKenna's Windward Ford in Kailua.

The car show runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

HPU men's tennis team in final 4

Hawaii Pacific advanced to the NCAA Division II men's tennis semifinals by beating Drury (Missouri) 5-1 yesterday at Altamonte Springs, Fla.

The sixth-ranked Sea Warriors will play top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic State (Georgia) today.

Nikola Petrov led HPU with a No. 1 singles win, and the doubles teams of Hendrik Bode and Sebastian Bader along with Aleksandar Markov and Anton Samuilau also won matches.

» The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii vs. Lynn (Florida) women's NCAA Division II quarterfinal match was halted due to rain and lightning with the Fighting Knights leading 1-0. The match will continue today.

» Valdosta State's (Georgia) women were leading HPU 2-1 when inclement weather conditions postponed the NCAA Division II quarterfinal yesterday. The match will resume today.

HPU softball players make all-region

Four Hawaii Pacific softball players were chosen to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-West Region team yesterday—seniors Krystal Plunkett and Courtney Kessell, junior Casey Sugihara and freshman Maile Kim.

Kessell, the PacWest pitcher of the year; Sugihara, a second baseman; and Kim, a designated player, made the first team. Plunkett, the PacWest player of the year, was picked to the second team.
