Mo-ped rider thrown into car's path

A 16-year-old mo-ped operator was critically injured yesterday morning after he was thrown from his mo-ped, which had rear-ended a car, and he was hit by another vehicle.

Police said the boy was riding an orange 2008 mo-ped north on North Kalaheo Street when he rear-ended a 2000 Subaru station wagon, being driven by a Kailua woman, that was in slowing traffic.

The boy was thrown from the mo-ped and landed in the southbound lane. A vehicle in the southbound lane then struck the boy.

He was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center.

The mo-ped rider was wearing a helmet at the time. The other drivers were uninjured, and their air bags did not deploy.

Suspicious odor sparks evacuation

About 100 people were evacuated yesterday from the Driver's Licensing Bureau at Kapalama City Square in Kalihi after a suspicious odor was reported.

The Fire Department's hazardous materials team responded to the 7:45 a.m. alarm at 1199 Dillingham Blvd.

A city emergency services team also was called because a woman reported difficulty breathing.

City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said two middle-age women were transported to an area hospital in stable condition. One was treated for slight difficulty in breathing and the other for anxiety, he said.

The city said an evaluation by the Fire Department found no health hazard, and the incident was classified as a nuisance odor.

The building will remain closed until Monday.
