A memorial service will be held Friday in Iraq for Staff Sgt. Randy Agno, a 1997 Pearl City High School graduate who died from injuries he suffered while serving in Iraq.

Agno, 29, died Friday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was taken after being injured in a noncombat incident April 27 at Forward Operating Base Olsen. The Army is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. The Pentagon generally attributes deaths by natural causes, a vehicle or other accident, friendly fire, homicide or suicide as noncombat in nature.

He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, which will hold the memorial service at Forward Operating Base Brassfield Mora near Samarra.

Agno was the third soldier from the 3rd Brigade to have died from a noncombat incident. Six 3rd Brigade soldiers have died in Iraq since the 25th Infantry Division unit was deployed to Iraq in October for the second time.

He was assigned to the 325th Brigade Support Battalion.

Agno joined the Army in 1998 and was trained as a food specialist and arrived in Hawaii in 2001.

This was his second deployment to Iraq. He also spent a year in Afghanistan.

His fellow soldiers, in an e-mail to the Star-Bulletin, described the father of two children, ages 5 and 3, as “;the type of guy who would do anything for anyone.”;

Sgt. Kathleen Pennicooke said Agno “;was always there when you needed someone to talk to and could make anyone feel better. He was a good friend and will be missed.”;

Spc. Erika Rivera said Agno “;was the type of person that would go out of his way to do something nice for somebody else, not asking for anything in return. He was very giving and somebody I can honestly say I looked at as a bigger brother.”;

Staff Sgt. Rosemary Huff added, “;I remember he asked me if he could cook a meal for my family. Always talking about food and sharing his recipes.”;

Agno was named the Junior Army Chef of the Year at the Army's 31st annual Culinary Arts Competition in 2006.
