Man who drowned near China Walls is identified

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the man who died Monday afternoon after swimming near China Walls as 27-year-old David Root of Honolulu.

The medical examiner determined Root died due to asphyxia due to drowning.

A fire official said Root was swimming with friends when he got separated. Bystanders spotted the man in the water and pulled him out and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Root was airlifted to a nearby street and then taken by ambulance to Straub Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Victim in motorcycle crash was 27-year-old Keaau man

A 27-year-old Big Island man who died Saturday from injuries he suffered in a motorcycle crash has been identified as Joshua Glenn Vanhook of Keaau.

Police said Vanhook was driving a 1985 Yamaha motorcycle south on Route 137 near Pohoiki when he lost control and ran off the right side of the road just before 4:30 p.m.

Police said they believe speed and alcohol were factors in this crash. Vanhook was not wearing a helmet.

Waikele resident accused of luring teen over Internet

A 24-year-old Waikele man was charged yesterday with first-degree electronic enticement of a child for allegedly using the Internet to entice a person whom he thought was a 14-year-old girl to meet him to have sex.

Thomas H. Brown faces a possible 10-year mandatory prison term if convicted.

The state attorney general's office said Brown, using online chats, thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl in the parking lot of the Don Quijote store and was supposed to take her to a park to have sex. However, the “;girl”; was actually a law enforcement officer.

Brown's bail was set at $30,000.
