Author of Cartwright book to speak

Author Monica Nucciarone will present her book about baseball founder Alexander Cartwright this Friday at the Hawaii State Library.

The 1-hour presentation previewing “;Alexander Cartwright: The Life behind the Baseball Legend,”; starts at 11:45 a.m. It will focus on Cartwright's 45 years in Hawaii as a businessman, civic leader and friend and advisor to Hawaiian royalty.

Early Marathon registration coming

Early walkup registration for the 37th Honolulu Marathon will be held at Sports Authority in Waikele on May 23 and 24. The hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. The fee is $30.

The marathon will be held Dec. 13 at 5 a.m.

Gabrio nets Gatorade soccer award

Jayann Gabrio of Punahou is the Gatorade Hawaii Girls Soccer Player of the Year.

The award distinguishes Gabrio as Hawaii's best high school girls soccer player. Gabrio is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award to be announced later this month.

The senior defender scored four goals this past season and anchored the back line, leading Punahou (13-0-3) to the Division I state title. Gabrio scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Kamehameha in the state championship game. She was the leader of a defense that recorded 12 shutouts and allowed just six goals in 16 games.

Gabrio has maintained a 3.72 GPA in the classroom.

Gabrio has signed a national letter of intent to play soccer at Cornell this fall.

HPU gets transfer from Illinois

Hawaii Pacific won't be without Division I college basketball talent next season. The Sea Warriors announced yesterday the signing of a third player from the upper echelon, this one a forward from Illinois.

C.J. Jackson is 6-feet-8 and 265 pounds and will be a senior. He was a member of two NCAA Tournament teams with the Illini.

“;C.J. has the strength and size we need to compete in the PacWest Conference,”; coach Tony Sellitto said.
