Carlos pitches a gem

When it comes to the green Mid-Pacific Owls, a keiki shall lead them.
Freshman Lindsey “;Keiki”; Carlos struck out 16 in a no-hit shutout against Hilo yesterday in the opening round of the DataHouse/HHSAA State Softball Championships at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Mid-Pacific, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu runner-up, faces third-seeded Baldwin (13-0) in today's quarterfinal round.
“;We saw them play in preseason against Punahou,”; MPI coach William Quinn said. “;They've got everybody back from last year. They're tough.”;
Carlos said she's ready to go again if called, especially with the first-game butterflies out of the way.
“;We mixed it up here and there, mostly fastballs,”; she said. “;Today was exciting and different.”;
Shortstop Kristin Yama (3-for-4, three RBIs) and third baseman Kacy Aoki (3-for-3) sparked a 15-hit attack for Mid-Pac (11-4).
It was a 1-0 game entering the sixth inning, though Carlos dominated from the start, whiffing the first 10 Vikings she faced. That was good news for a nervous MPI squad; three starters are freshmen and the entire roster has just two seniors.
The Owls' nerves were real. They committed five errors out of only seven balls put in play. Quinn was thankful, though, that his team advanced to the quarterfinals.
