Meet with fake teen ends in arrest

A 24-year-old Waikele man was arrested Sunday on suspicion of electronic enticement of a child.

The suspect allegedly communicated online with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl but was actually police, and agreed to meet for sex, police said.

Police arrested the man at 7:25 p.m. Sunday after he showed up at an agreed-upon location across from 801 Kaheka St.

Man nabbed in Hilo theft and assault

Big Island police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of punching a 52-year-old man and stealing his portable electronic device in Hilo on Sunday.

Police responded at 4:59 a.m. to a call of a possible robbery at an address on Pauahi Street.

After the victim described the suspect, police searched the area and found the assailant.

Fire Department medics took the victim to Hilo Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Police warn of sweepstakes scam

Big Island police warn that a sweepstakes mail scam is growing.

Residents have received mail from a supposed sweepstakes claiming the recipient has won a large sum of money, police said.

In one instance a resident received a check for $2,615 from “;Nationstar International World Sweepstakes,”; according to police. The resident was told that the check was to cover “;charges/fees”; that the resident was required to pay, in order to receive a larger cash prize.

The check was from “;Marketing Direct Plus”; through “;Commercial Bank.”; It is green and about 8 1/2 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide.

Police warn that if residents receive such a check, they should not cash or deposit it. Instead, they may call the Police Department's nonemergency line at 935-3311.

Woman faces 151 charges

A preliminary hearing will be held tomorrow for a 35-year-old Kailua woman who was arrested last week on 151 counts of credit card fraud, identity theft, forgery, theft and unauthorized possession of personal information.

Police said Susan Shaw stole $160,733 from 11 victims from as far back as April 2008. Police said a search of her Kaipiha Street home in Kailua turned up 63 gift cards and numerous receipts with identities of people from whom Shaw is accused of stealing. Bail was set at $1 million.

Shaw is charged with applying for credit cards using other people's names and making purchases and cash withdrawals with them.

She was arrested Thursday at the Hawaiian Airlines baggage claim.
