Honolulu's Michelle Wie fired a 1-under 70 yesterday at the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill in Williamsburg, Va. She is tied for 30th, six shots off the pace of first-day leader Lorena Ochoa.
Wie had an up-and-down opening round. She carded five birdies and four bogeys, dropping as low as 3 under at one point before a couple of bogeys over her closing holes kept her from drawing closer to the world's No. 1 player.
The 19-year-old graduate of Punahou School managed only nine pars. Her average driving distance was 253 yards, she hit 11 greens in regulation and only seven fairways as she continues to struggle with her driver. She landed in red figures thanks to only 26 putts.
Ochoa takes a one-shot advantage over Lindsey Wright into today's second round. Ochoa has yet to win this LPGA event, settling for second three times.
