Officer allegedly punched while serving a warrant

A police officer trying to serve a warrant on a man in Waianae was punched and had his badge ripped off his shirt early yesterday morning, police said.

The man ran off with the officer's badge about 1:50 a.m., but police found the suspect and recovered the badge. The man was arrested for investigation of assault against a law enforcement officer in the first degree, resisting arrest, theft and criminal property damage.

The officer was treated at a nearby hospital and released.

Man in Big Island crash died from a heart attack

Big Island police said 70-year-old Peter Gusman of Waimea died from a heart attack, not from a one-vehicle accident Saturday.

Gusman ran off the right side of Kawaihae Road Saturday near the 58-mile marker. His 1998 Ford F-150 pickup truck was traveling west.

Stolen boat recovered but equipment still missing

Big Island police have recovered a 19-foot boat and a trailer stolen two weeks ago from a Holua boat yard in Keauhou, but they are still seeking information about equipment missing from the boat.

Police recovered the boat and trailer at the end of South Point Road on Monday. Still missing are the twin stainless steel 50-horsepower Yamaha outboard motors, motor switches and a motor shifter, a white plastic pedestal captain seat, three outrigger holders, two Interstate batteries, two gaffes, five orange life vests, one blue square float, an 8-foot white Pomade fiberglass fish box and 50 gallons of gasoline.

The 19-foot Mako boat and a Quickload boat trailer were taken from the boat yard between April 25 and Saturday.

Anyone with information about the stolen boat or its contents can call Detective Sharlotte Bird at 326-4646, ext. 228, or the Police Department's nonemergency line at 935-3311.
