Shop a lot, get $5 flowers for mom

Redemption counters will be set up at Ward Warehouse (Ewa end) and Ward Centre (near the valet), from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, while supplies last.

Honolulu Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that works to eliminate poverty housing on Oahu.

The offer is restricted to one plant per person aged 18 or older. For restaurant receipts, the gratuity is excluded. Credit-card receipts must accompany detailed receipts.

Galleries open up to tea and fashion

Art and fashion go hand-in-hand this month, starting with Hawaii Fashion Incubator's “;Tea for Two and TCM: Mom and You”; spring trunk show fashion event taking place from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday on the lawn just outside the cafe.

The TCM Cafe will offer a full lunch service or tea and dessert from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on that day, with reservations being taken at 523-3362.

While there, shop for jewelry, clothing and vintage apparel and accessories offered by established and emerging designers and companies Umee, Cloth, Zsuzsa B, Martinique, Sierra Dew and Soozou.

Then check out the Artists of Hawai'i show when it opens May 14 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, where communications professor Doug Ing's handpainted Kikaida jacket will be on view along with 81 other artworks created by local artists.

The exhibition, the longest-running juried art show in the United States, will continue through Aug. 16.

Ing, a communications professor at Hawaii Pacific University, said he doesn't typically work on two-dimensional pieces. He considers himself a filmmaker, having made more than 70 short films in nearly two decades, working in animation, documentary and pixelvision video. His 2008 film “;Taj Mahal Postcard”; had its world premiere at the New York International Asian Film Festival last summer.

The last time he painted a denim jacket was in 1998, when he recreated an image from one of his animated films. Wearing it one day, he removed it on a subway in New York and forgot it there.

“;I was heartbroken. It's been nearly a dozen years before I decided to paint another,”; he said.

But the experience has left him with a desire to continue in similar mode.

“;I'm gonna start doing more art work. It's much more affordable than making films.”;

Beach trip closer than you think

Audiences laughed when, on an episode of “;Seinfeld,”; Kramer returned from a day at the beach with the idea of recreating its essence in a perfume named, obviously, Beach. It was an idea later made real on the program by Calvin Klein.
