A great defensive play set the stage for a walk-off win by Moanalua.

Miles Higa singled home Mike Egami with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Na Menehune a 3-2 victory over Mililani in the Division I first round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA State Baseball Championships last night at Les Murakami Stadium.

“;This is a scrappy bunch,”; Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said. “;They're a bunch of fighters. Young, but they really want to do well.”;

Higa's game-winning hit came on the heels of an outstanding play by Na Menehune's defense in the top of the inning.

With the game tied at 2, Mililani pinch hitter Ray Sugihara laced a leadoff double down the right-field line that got all the way to the wall. Sugihara got greedy and tried to extend it to a triple, but Bronson Shim hit shortstop Tim Arakawa with a bullet on the relay throw. Arakawa then fired the ball to third to Daniel Sugihara, who got the tag down just in time to get Ray Sugihara out.

“;We had to make two perfect throws,”; Yamada said.

Jacob Fukuyama retired the next two batters in order, setting the stage for Higa's heroics in the bottom of the seventh.

Egami doubled to start the inning. Then Higa came to the plate. A wild pitch moved Egami over to third and Higa ended it with a ground ball down the third-base line that got past Andrew Benitez.

“;He threw a fastball down the middle and I got it down the line,”; Higa said. “;Mike did a good job getting the double and I just had to get (the ball) to the outfield.”;

Jacob Meyer finished 3-for-4 with a triple and four runs scored and Piikea Kitamura was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs as the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Warriors romped over the Big Island Warriors.

Three pitchers combined on the shutout for Kamehameha.
