Police said Kahanaoi went to Kimsel's Oneawa Street home April 28 looking for his ex-girlfriend, Rusty Anoba, who was hiding inside. Kahanaoi shot Kimsel in the back as he walked away after telling Kahanaoi the woman was not there, Kimsel's brother said.

Anoba filed for a restraining order March 17, claiming that Kahanaoi assaulted her when she told him she wanted to leave.
