Fire starting in biodiesel tank shuts Maui landfill

Fire shut down the Central Maui landfill yesterday. The fire started at 10:48 a.m. on a biodiesel holding tank owned by Pacific Biodiesel Inc., which runs a biodiesel production plant at the landfill.

Officials reopened the landfill shortly after 1:30 p.m. No one was injured. The cause remained under investigation.

Police believe stolen goods were sold at Big Isle home

The Hawaii Police Department is warning the public that stolen goods were sold at garage sales at a home in the Orchidland Estates subdivision in Puna.

Vice officers arrested a 60-year-old man at his home on Aulii Street Tuesday in relation to a drug investigation, and saw what they believed to be stolen goods, including construction tools, personal items and computers. Police recovered about 150 stolen items valued at $150,000 and arrested the man for second-degree theft. On Wednesday he was released without charges on the drug and theft cases, pending further investigation.

Bicyclist injured after fall in North Shore ravine

A bicyclist sustained non-life-threatening injures after falling about 20 feet off a trail near Kaena Point on the North Shore, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The man, in his 30s, was riding his bike when he fell into a ravine, Kealoha said. A fire helicopter airlifted the man to the Dillingham area and transferred him to paramedics.

44-foot vessel is stranded between 2 reefs off Kahala

The state is monitoring a 44-foot vessel stranded between two reefs off Kahala.

A bystander called firefighters to report a stranded boater at about 1 p.m., said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Firefighters found the boat, Fast Forward, taking on water and no one on board. The tide was going out, and they decided not to move the boat to prevent causing more damage, Kealoha said. Firefighters turned the scene over to Department of Land and Natural Resources officials.
