Cyclist critically injured by tour bus

A 34-year-old cyclist from Waialua was in critical condition after a tour bus hit him yesterday on Kamehameha Highway near Dole Plantation.

About 1:20 p.m., the cyclist was traveling Wahiawa-bound near Paalaa Uka Pupukea Road in a shoulder bicycle lane next to another cyclist when the bus clipped him, police said. The man, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the bike.

The driver of the bus, a 52-year-old Waipahu man, was not injured, police said. The 50 passengers on the bus were also not injured.

Woman accused of attempted murder

Prosecutors charged a 33-year-old Waianae woman who allegedly ran over a Honolulu police officer in Waianae with first-degree attempted murder and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Bail for Norina Rzonca was set yesterday at $51,000.

Police say the incident occurred Friday after police responded at about 8:30 a.m. to a domestic argument in a vehicle on Lualualei Homestead Road. When the police arrived, Rzonca allegedly made a U-turn and drove toward the officer, hitting him and running over his right foot, police said.

The officer, 38, drew his weapon and fired one shot toward the vehicle.

Rzonca fled, but later turned herself in to police.

The officer was treated at the hospital and released.

Police recapture 4 escaped juveniles

Police yesterday recaptured four boys who had escaped from the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility in the morning.

The boys, ages 14 to 17, were on a work crew in Kailua when they fled the scene at about 10 a.m.

Witnesses saw the boys walking on Hamakua Drive. When police spotted them, they fled into Kaelepulu Stream. A police helicopter joined the search.

Police immediately recaptured one boy. At about 2:15 p.m., police arrested the other boys when a Kailua resident found them hiding under her deck.

Accident closes highway in Laie

Police closed Kamehameha Highway in Laie for several hours yesterday after a vehicle knocked down an electrical pole.

The accident occurred at about 3:35 a.m. No one was injured.

Haleiwa-bound traffic was diverted down Naniloa Loop with Kaneohe-bound traffic moving onto Hale Laa Boulevard.
