Musical beckons visitors to Kauai

“;South Pacific,”; the box-office hit about forbidden love on a tropical island during World War II, has been re- released on Blu-ray disc by Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment to observe the movie's 50th anniversary. Most of the movie was filmed on Kauai's North Shore in 1957 and 1958.

Sue Kanoho of the Kauai Visitors Bureau said the North Shore remains largely the same five decades later. “;Kauai's allure and spectacular natural beauty helped tell the story of 'South Pacific.' Travelers coming here today will enjoy many of those same qualities,”; Kanoho said.

Visitors can still see many of the landmarks made famous by the movie musical. Mount Makana in Haena was the inspiration for the movie's “;island of Bali Hai.”; The main character, Nellie Forbush (played by Mitzi Gaynor) sang “;I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair”; at Lumahai Beach. Other scenes were filmed at a spot overlooking Princeville resort, at Hanalei Bay and on the banks of the Kilauea River.

“;'South Pacific' helped put Kauai on the map for travelers, and our island is as lovely and inviting today as it was 50 years ago,”; Kanoho said.
