KCC art show covers spectrum

It's gratifying to see what our public university system is turning out in the way of art talent at Kapiolani Community College's “;Student Exhibit 2009,”; showing at Koa Gallery on the KCC campus through Friday.

The show boasts several hundred works in media that run the gamut: There's a drawing corner, a painting section, ceramics, photography, digital work, even jewelry and figure-modeling, which is required for those studying animation.

“;It teaches them about the human figure in 3-D,”; says Charlotte Kubiak, assistant to Koa Gallery director David Behlke. “;Other art classes, like figure drawing, is 2-D. So it's something they can apply to animation.”;

The student exhibit is so large, in fact, that the works fill every nook of the gallery space, with several dozen more in the campus' Lama Library.

Kubiak and Behlke say this is among the most popular annual shows at Koa.

“;About 120 people a day come to see this show,”; Behlke says. “;This year's work is really great.”;

Koa Gallery hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays to Fridays and until 3 p.m. Saturdays. Call 734-9374.
