UH chancellor considers athletics fee

A proposal to institute an athletics fee is being considered by Hawaii chancellor Virginia Hinshaw. The $50 fee would be added to the students' tuition.

There are still a few steps the proposal would need to clear before being implemented. Hinshaw would have to forward the proposal to UH president David McClain, who could then put it before the Board of Regents for final approval.

“;It's still pending a decision from the chancellor,”; UH spokesman Gregg Takayama said.

The athletic department had a $5.4 million cumulative debt at the end of last fiscal year. UH associate athletic director Carl Clapp said the department is considering additional student seating at events as part of the proposal.

“;It's still a work in progress,”; Clapp said. “;We're just trying to advance the idea and do it through the channels at the university that are appropriate.”;

Sea Warriors sweep in baseball

Aaron Asher hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Hawaii Pacific hung on for a 7-6 win over Grand Canyon in yesterday's second game of a PacWest baseball doubleheader in Phoenix.

In the opener, the Sea Warriors downed the Antelopes 4-1 behind Caelen O'Meara's four-hitter.

HPU (27-16, 13-9) kept alive its hopes for a share of the conference championship with the two victories. Should the Sea Warriors sweep today's twin bill with Grand Canyon, they would tie Dixie State (29-17, 15-9) for the PacWest title.

HPU women travel to tennis regional

The Hawaii Pacific women's tennis team can accomplish two things on next week's trip to San Diego for the NCAA regional.

The Sea Warriors, ranked third in the West Region, can avenge an earlier loss to UC San Diego as well as earn a spot in the NCAA Division II championship. HPU (15-7) lost to the host Tritons (15-5) earlier this season 5-4.

Competition is scheduled for next Saturday. The winner advances to the 16-team national tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Sea Warriors sign 6 for volleyball

Castle High product Tihani Kekauoha and Kamehameha's Sanoe Recca headline the six-member recruiting class for Hawaii Pacific volleyball announced yesterday.

Kekauoha, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter, is transferring from Mesa State. Other transfers are Mariana Souza, a 5-10 hitter from Laredo (Texas) Community College; Victoria Green, a 5-11 middle from Cowley (Kan.) CC; and Madison Hardy, a 5-7 setter from Western (Iowa) CC.

Recca, a 5-9 hitter, and Taylor Rico, a 5-5 defensive specialist, are incoming freshmen. Rico is a four-time all-league pick from Roslyn High in Washington state.
