Viloria coming home for parade in Waipahu

Recently crowned IBF flyweight world champion Brian Viloria of Waipahu plans on returning to the islands this month.

Viloria, who beat Ulises Solis for the belt in the Philippines two weeks ago, said he'll arrive in Hawaii on May 13 and be home for about a week. There'll be a press conference, and a parade through Waipahu in his honor is planned for Saturday, May 16.

Viloria is currently in Las Vegas for tomorrow's junior welterweight fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ricky Hatton.

He told the Star-Bulletin recently that he would like to defend his title in Hawaii and wants to meet with promoter Tom Moffatt. Viloria has not fought in Hawaii since 2003.

Brigham Young-Hawaii signs JUCO transfer from Utah

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's basketball team signed Rory Patterson from Snow College in Utah.

Patterson, a forward, averaged 10.1 points and 3.9 rebounds a game last season after missing 10 games due to injuries. He was a preseason All-American out of Logan High School before the injuries hit.

The Seasiders return All-American Lucas Alves and PacWest Freshman of the Year Jet Chang from a team the advanced to the NCAA sweet sixteen the last two years.

UH-Hilo honors Smith, Seben

John Smith and Fabianne Seben were announced UH-Hilo's athletes of the year at the school's banquet yesterday.

Smith was PacWest first-team guard for the basketball team while Seben was an honorable mention All-America for the volleyball team.
