2 deaths in fire ruled homicide and accidental
Police have reclassified an investigation into a fatal Makiki fire to a homicide and an accidental death.
The action came after firefighters determined Wednesday that the fire was intentionally set.
Larry Fair, 58, and Khristy Rae Sasaki, 48, died in the fire. Officials said they died of smoke inhalation.
Eight people lived in the three-story, five-bedroom home.
Neighbors said that before the blaze Sasaki had been arguing with other tenants about someone stealing her husband's mo-ped and appeared intoxicated.
Parasailing death was due to accident, autopsy finds
The Honolulu Medical Examiner has classified the death of a water sports company employee who fell from a parasailing rope as an accident.
Cole Ciliax, 24, died from “;asphyxia due to salt water drowning due to fall from height,”; an autopsy determined.
Witnesses said Ciliax fell about 40 feet into the ocean Tuesday afternoon after he apparently removed himself from his harness and attempted to use the parasailing rope like a zip line to slide down to the boat.
Son charged with arson in fire at home of parents
Authorities charged 32-year-old Daniel Tom of Kapolei with second-degree arson yesterday for allegedly trying to set fire to his parents' home.
His parents told police that after an argument at about 4 p.m. Sunday, Tom grabbed a large gasoline container and doused the side of the house, then lit it with a lighter. The parents quickly extinguished the fire, police said.
Body of 23-year-old man is found in Kewalo Basin
Police found the body of a man at 11:40 a.m. yesterday floating in Kewalo Basin.
Police have tentatively identified him as a 23-year-old man who was last seen alive at 12:30 a.m. yesterday. The case has been classified as an unattended death.
