Warriors ninth in WAC golf tourney

The Hawaii men's golf team concluded its season with a ninth-place finish in yesterday's Western Athletic Conference championship in Henderson, Nev.

Freshman T.J. Kua was the Warriors' top finisher, carding an 11-over 227. Kua also led the field in pars (38) and was one of only five golfers to eagle a hole.

Hawaii finished at 945, well off the 870 turned in by champion New Mexico State. The Aggies' Travis Reid took medalist honors at 7-under 209.

New football coach for Hawaii Prep

Jordan Hayslip has been named the new football coach at Hawaii Prep, replacing Geoy Purdy.

Hayslip has been a Ka Makani assistant for the past six seasons, the last two as defensive coordinator.

Under Purdy, HPA went 20-15 over four years.

HPU, BYUH host NCAA tennis regionals

Hawaii Pacific and Brigham Young-Hawaii have been selected as host sites for next week's NCAA men's west regional tennis tournaments.

The Sea Warriors (13-4), ranked first in the region, host No. 4 UC San Diego at 11:30 a.m. on May 7 at the Kailua Racquet Club. HPU defeated the Tritons 7-2 earlier this year in San Diego.

The Seasiders (15-4) host Hawaii-Hilo (8-7) in a 2 p.m. match, also on May 7. The teams split their four matches 2-2.

The regional winners advance to the May 13-16 NCAA tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

HPU stays at No. 3 in softball poll

Hawaii Pacific heads into the final weekend of the regular season still ranked third in the west region softball poll.

The Sea Warriors (38-10, 18-4 PacWest) are looking to win their third consecutive conference title when they host Hawaii-Hilo (26-20, 13-8) in doubleheaders Saturday and Sunday. HPU needs one win Saturday to clinch the championship.

The top two teams in the region will host a sub-regional. Those bids will be awarded Sunday.

Theurer new BYUH soccer coach

Carolyn Theurer, the assistant for the Brigham Young-Hawaii women's soccer team, has been promoted to head coach.

Theurer replaces William Mahoni, who will become the Seasiders' director of soccer operations. Theurer was an all-league player for four years at Utah Valley State.

Bode, Wilson earn top HPU honors

Hendrik Bode and Tiffany Wilson were named the top student-athletes at the Hawaii Pacific sports banquet.

Bode is the top-ranked men's singles tennis player in the NCAA west region. Wilson was voted the newcomer of the year in PacWest women's basketball.

The scholar-athlete awards went to Kevin Enriques from men's cross country and Taylor Craig from women's basketball, both of whom had 4.0 grade-point averages.
