Hawaii Pontiac owners will continue to receive service from remaining General Motors dealers, said Nick Cutter, president of Cutter Family Auto Centers. It sells the make from its Cutter Pontiac, Buick and GMC of Waipahu dealership.

“;From what we know, the warranties will be honored for those discontinued brands by the remaining General Motors network, pledged and backed up by the United States government,”; he said.

He has not received details on whether GM will cut dealerships in Hawaii as part of its plan to eliminate 50 percent by 2014.

“;As dealers, none of us know what that means to us individually, but again, if you're the Hummer dealer or Saab dealer or the Saturn dealer, I think you know pretty well what's going on.”;

He is confident “;Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC will survive and probably prosper quite well when all this is done.”;

The ongoing tumult is “;unprecedented in 100 years in the U.S. auto industry,”; said Cutter, also vice president of the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association.

“;It wasn't long ago that GM was the largest corporation in the world,”; and “;had 51 percent of the U.S. auto market for new cars and trucks,”; circa the 1970s, he said.

Sometimes this sort of seismic change can have a positive outcome, Cutter said.
