Man charged in stabbing of blind baby pet pig

A Kaneohe man has been charged with killing a blind baby pig that was a pet at an animal sanctuary in Hawaii Kai.

Randall Kaulahea, 24, was charged with hunting on private property and posted $100 bail Saturday.

The baby pig belonged to the Hawaii Animal Sanctuary, which takes care of ill or handicapped animals at a farm on Kamilonui Place, said Hawaii Kai Neighborhood Board member Gary Weller, the farm's owner.

Weller said he was not home during the incident at about 2 p.m. Saturday.

Kaulahea drove up a private road and allegedly set loose hunting dogs that tore into the pig. Then he allegedly stabbed it at least twice. Volunteers heard the dogs and the pig squealing and came out to see the pig being stabbed, Weller said.

He said police were called and the suspect was arrested.

The 6-month-old pig weighed about 75 pounds and was blind at birth. The pig was named Keller, after Helen Keller, he said.

Weller said this is the second time in six months that hunters have killed a pig on his property.

Motorcycle accident victim was a Pearl City man, 46

A 46-year-old man killed Sunday when his motorcycle hit a van in Kailua has been identified by the city medical examiner as Eric Souza of Pearl City.

Souza died at Castle Medical Center.

He was riding in a group of five motorcyclists, police said. Another motorcyclist was taken in critical condition to the Queen's Medical Center after the 2:10 p.m. accident, police said.

Both motorcyclists hit the van, which had begun a U-turn in front of them near Uluoa Street, police said. They were investigating whether anyone was speeding. Neither motorcyclist was wearing a helmet, police said.

Souza's death was the 24th traffic fatality on Oahu so far this year. Nine of those killed were operating motorcycles.
