Aggies gain split with rout of Rainbows

The most impressive thing about New Mexico State's 20 runs scored yesterday is the Aggies only needed six innings to do it.
Bryan Marquez finished 4-for-4 with four runs and four RBIs, and New Mexico State became the first team to score at least 20 runs in a game against Hawaii in 12 years in a 20-9 seven-inning blowout of the 20th-ranked Rainbows at Presley Askew Field in Las Cruces, N.M.
Wade Reynoso went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBIs as the Aggies (34-10, 9-7 Western Athletic Conference) earned a split of their four-game series against the Rainbows (26-16, 9-6).
Hawaii is percentage points behind Nevada for the league lead, while the Aggies sit a half-game out after their sixth game of at least 20 runs scored this year.
“;This puts us back a half-game behind Hawaii for the conference lead and we're in a position now where we still have a chance to win this league,”; New Mexico State coach Rocky Ward said.
New Mexico State scored 53 runs in the four-game series and saved its best performance for last.
The Aggies jumped all over UH starter Alex Capaul, touching him for six runs in 1 1/3 innings. Jesse Moore replaced Capaul in the second inning, but couldn't record an out before Connor Little took over.
By the time the second inning was done, the Aggies had already scored 10 runs.
“;We got the game started with a bang,”; Ward said. “;We scored 10 runs in the first two innings and kind of took the wind out of their dugout.”;
New Mexico State finished with 18 hits and scored in five of the six innings it came to bat.
Sebastian Vendette picked up the win for the Aggies, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings while walking four and striking out seven.
The Rainbows hadn't allowed 20 runs or more in a game since San Jose State put 23 runs on the board against Hawaii on February 28, 1998.
Vinnie Catricala homered and scored three runs and Kolten Wong went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to 16 games.
Hawaii begins its final WAC homestand Thursday against Louisiana Tech.
