City workers find 24 bags of bones inside Wilder Avenue tree trunk

City workers who cut down a tree fronting 1335 Wilder Ave. on Friday afternoon discovered two dozen plastic bags containing bones hidden inside its trunk.

The bones have been turned over to the Medical Examiner's office, which will determine if the bones are human on Monday.

 

Chaperone of a sports team caught carrying firearm at Honolulu Airport

Sheriffs arrested a 48-year-old chaperone who allegedly tried to catch a flight from Honolulu International Airport with a loaded firearm.

At about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, security officials stopped the man when they found a .22-caliber semi-automatic firearm in his carry on bag, said Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Louise Kim McCoy.

McCoy said the man was a chaperone for a girl's volleyball team traveling to the mainland. He was released that night at 10:30 without being charged.

The case has been turned over to the Attorney General's office.

 

Police searching for gunman accused of assaulting jewelry shop employee

Police are searching for a gunman who allegedly assaulted a worker during a robbery attempt at a Kalihi pawn shop yesterday morning.

Police said at 10 a.m. the man looked at a ring in the store then left. About 10 minutes later, he returned, allegedly brandishing a handgun and demanding money and gold.

Police said the clerk refused and the man pistol whipped the clerk, then fled without taking anything.
