'Saved by Angels' author to speak

A Wisconsin evangelist, whose 2008 book “;Saved by Angels”; describes his near-death experience after a traffic accident, will speak in Nanakuli this evening at an interdenominational service.

Bruce Van Natta will speak at the 6:30 p.m. event at Nanaikapono Elementary School cafeteria. Van Natta, a former mechanic, founded Sweet Bread Ministries after recovering from the 2006 mishap. He speaks at churches and other groups nationwide.

A healing service will follow, led by Bruce Carlson of Sweet Bread Ministries and the Rev. John Frederick of St. Michael the Archangel Eastern Orthodox Church.

St. Luke's celebrating 100th year

St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Nuuanu is celebrating its 100th anniversary this weekend.

The church at 45 N. Judd St., a landmark with its belltower resembling an Asian pagoda, was established as a mission for immigrants from Korea.

Two guest priests ordained in the Anglican Church of Korea will lead the 9 a.m. Holy Communion service tomorrow. The Rev. Valentine Han, who leads the Korean Convocation within the Episcopal Church in the United States, will be celebrant. The speaker will be the Rev. Nak-Hyon Joseph Joo, a doctoral candidate at the Graduate Theological Union at Berkeley, Calif.

Descendants of the founding members continued to be active in the church.

The Rev. Tom Van Culin is rector of the church which now has a multi-ethnic congregation.

Noted LA priest is Newman speaker

A Los Angeles priest whose outreach to juvenile gang members led to creation of the successful nonprofit Homeboy Industries will be guest speaker at Newman Center services next weekend.

The Rev. Gregory Boyle, a nationally known Jesuit priest, started his work in 1986 in a poor parish. It grew from a small bakery to a multifaceted organization, including Homeboy Maintenance, Homeboy Merchandise, Homeboy Silkscreens and Homegirl Cafe, all providing jobs for former gang members and ex-prisoners. The project led to creation of an elementary school and day-care center.

Boyle will speak at the 5 p.m. Mass next Saturday and at the 9 and 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Masses May 3.
