Honolulu’s Michele Wie remained in contention at the Corona Championhip with a 2-under 71 in today’s second round of the LPGA Tour event to drop to 9-under 137 for the tournament held in Morelia, Mexico.

Wie had three birdies and one bogey for her round that left her in a tie for sixth, six shots off the pace of defending champion Lorena Ochoa. The world’s No. 1 player shot back-to-back 8-under 65s and holds a three-shot lead over world No. 5 Suzann Pettersen.

This is Wie’s fourth LPGA event of 2009. She finished second at the SBS Open at Turtle Bay earlier this year.

“It was kind of frustrating today,” Wie told the Associated Press today. She was a stroke behind Ochoa yesterday after a 66. “I did not make a single putt out there today. Hopefully tomorrow I will make some birdies. It’s going to be a great weekend. I am really looking forward to it. It’s just a privilege to be able to play with the best players in the world.”

Meanwhile fellow local golfers on the PGA Tour had good rounds today as well. Honolulu’s Parker McLachlin remained in contention at the Zurich Classic with a 69 for a two-day total of 136. He trailed second-round leader Jerry Kelly by two shots and is currently tied for fourth. Former Kaneohe resident Dean Wilson missed he cut in the same event.
