Malcolm Lane just kept on running ... with a few dozen of his friends closing fast.

The Hawaii receiver capped the Warriors' final practice of the spring yesterday by hauling in a pass from Brent Rausch and sprinting to the end zone to close a 2-minute-drill period that served as a sneak preview of tomorrow's Warrior Bowl.

“;When you're in the end zone and you score and you look back and the whole team is running down after you, that's what makes football so much fun,”; Lane said.

After about an hour of practice at Ching Field, the Warriors broke up into their teams for the spring game—Mauka and Makai—and ended their final on-campus workout by giving both sides a chance to run and defend a 2-minute drill.

Both teams started at the 30, and Shane Austin appeared to drive the Mauka team to a score when he connected with Greg Salas for a touchdown. But a penalty wiped out the play and the team eventually ran out of time at the 9-yard line when Austin caught a pass batted back to him and couldn't get another play off.

The Makai took over, and after a no-gain scramble by Rausch on first down, the junior quarterback lofted a pass down the right side for Lane, who separated from the cornerback and caught the ball in stride for a 70-yard score.

The play provided a rousing conclusion to practice and kick-started the hype for tomorrow's intrasquad scrimmage at Aloha Stadium.

“;I want this game to be as competitive as possible,”; said Lane, who traded jerseys with injured slotback Rick Taylor and wore No. 9 instead of 89. “;All of us are competitive people and everybody wants to win.

“;I know there's going to be a couple people looking for my head, but that comes with the turf.”;

Lane is a returning starter on the right side, and his run to the end zone showed he's maintained his speed despite missing about a month of offseason workouts due to illness.

“;I'm just looking forward as soon as spring is over getting right back to work for next year,”; Lane said.

The spring game will be preceded by an autograph session at 1 p.m. The scrimmage is scheduled to start at 3.
