Mokulele and Continental reach pact

Mokulele Airlines has implemented an interline ticketing agreement with Continental Airlines that will allow Continental passengers to book and ticket destinations in Hawaii beyond Honolulu.

The interisland carrier serves Kahului; Kona and Hilo (effective May 1) on the Big Island; Lihue, Kauai; and Molokai/Hoolehua, Molokai.

Ex-ALPA president on Hawaiian board

Former Northwest Airlines Capt. Duane Woerth, ex-president of the Air Line Pilots Association International, has been appointed as the Hawaiian Airlines ALPA unit's new representative on the company's board of directors.

Woerth replaces Hawaiian Capt. Eric Nicolai, who submitted his resignation to the Master Executive Council last month. Nicolai had served as the pilot representative on the Hawaiian Airlines board since 2006. Woerth served two terms—from 1999 to 2007—as president of the world's largest pilots union.

Subscriber growth lifts Netflix profit

SAN JOSE, Calif. » Netflix Inc.'s first-quarter profit soared as more people signed up for its DVD-by-mail service than in any other three-month period in its history, an achievement apparently driven by consumers' desire for cheaper forms of entertainment during the recession.

The company said yesterday it added 920,000 customers during the first three months of the year, boosting its first-quarter profit 68 percent to $22.4 million, or 37 cents a share. That compared with $13.3 million, or 21 cents a share, at the same time last year.

Revenue rose 21 percent to $394 million.

Amazon earnings and revenue jump

NEW YORK » The recession might mean consumers are cutting discretionary spending, but Amazon.com didn't seem to feel much of a pinch in its first quarter.

The Seattle-based online retailer said yesterday that during the first three months of the year, earnings and revenue climbed thanks to strong sales of products such as books, DVDs and electronics.

Amazon.com Inc. said earnings climbed 24 percent to $177 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with $143 million, or 34 cents a share, in the year-ago quarter. The company said revenue rose 18 percent to $4.89 billion.
