Rainbows bedeviled by ASU
POSTED: Wednesday, April 22, 2009
Tempe, Ariz. » The math was easy.
Too many mistakes and too many given opportunities equaled doom for the Hawaii baseball team last night.
Confronting Arizona State, one of the top teams in the country, the Rainbows surrendered three runs in the fifth inning on just one hit, three walks and two errors.
That was only the beginning of the end.
That meltdown helped cause one side of the 17-2 defeat to the No. 3 Sun Devils, so ranked by Baseball America. The other side of the equation was the Rainbows' pitching. Usually around the plate, eight Hawaii pitchers walked seven batters and hit another.
What upset Rainbows coach Mike Trapasso was not the amount of walks but how the pitches were delivered.
“;We do not walk people, and the way our pitchers threw was disappointing,”; Trapasso said. “;We had guys throwing as hard as they could and things just went out of hand.”;
