KHON still leads at 6
POSTED: Wednesday, April 22, 2009
The latest TV news ratings reflect a dynamic local market with no one station dominating all time slots.
KHON has a large lead in the morning, and longtime anchor Joe Moore is easily beating competitors at 6 p.m. with double the rating and share points of closest rival KGMB-TV, according to Nielsen ratings released yesterday.
At KGMB two new anchors, Tannya Joaquin and Stacy Loe, occupy the seat vacated by veteran anchor Kim Gennaula after the last Nielsen ratings. Its 10 p.m. news is No. 1.
Nevertheless, KHON went up, and “;it was pretty ... energizing to us to be that close to KGMB with the (CBS) prime-time lineups,”; said Joe McNamara, KHON president and general manager.
It was also the first rating period since KITV made changes to its morning show lineup, adding weathercaster Amber-Lynn Hyden and traffic anchor Yasmin Dar. KHNL's anchor changes are more recent and are not reflected in this survey.
Based on ratings and share, KITV's Pamela Young and Gary Sprinkle topped KHON for No. 1 at 5 p.m. The anchors added the 6 p.m. show to their workdays late last year.
“;The two things that we wanted to do with this book were to regain some momentum in the morning and to regain the No. 1 spot at 5 o'clock, so we're quite pleased,”; said Mike Rosenberg, president and general manager.
“;Unfortunately the new book (rating period) starts Thursday, so we can't rest on our laurels very long,”; he said with a laugh.
The February ratings were moved to March to avoid conflict with the DTV transition, originally set for Feb. 17. However, Hawaii stations transitioned early, in January.
Ratings measure households and viewers but also demographics.
“;In the demo battle we're right in there for first or second place,”; said John Fink, vice president and general manager of KHNL/KFVE-TV.
KHNL's sister station KFVE airs news at 6:30 and 9 p.m. and does not share viewers with other stations, Fink said.
March TV differs from February and “;didn't even resemble our normal programming patterns,”; said Rick Blangiardi, KGMB president and general manager. NCAA basketball coverage pre-empted several evening newscasts.
The station instead focused efforts on the May rating period, he said.
How they rate
Hawaii's local weekday television news ratings from March 5 through April 1.
* KFVE's evening news airs at 6:30 p.m.
# KFVE's late news airs at 9 p.m.
Note: A rating is a percentage of all television households in Hawaii. A share is the percentage of people watching TV at that time who are tuned in to a particular show.
