A 20-year-old Kaneohe Marine who had just started his second combat tour in Iraq this month died Thursday in a nonhostile incident, the Pentagon reported.

The Pentagon did not release any other details about the death of Lance Cpl. Ray A. Spencer II of Ridgecrest, Calif., except to say the incident is under investigation.

Spencer was a rifleman assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, which is stationed at Kaneohe Bay. He had been in Iraq for less than a month and was pulling his second combat tour; his first deployment was August 2007 to February 2008.

Spencer joined the Marine Corps in June 2006 and reported to Hawaii in January 2007. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

The Fox affiliate KBAK/KBFX in Bakersfield, Calif., reported that Spencer graduated in 2006 from Burrough High School, where staff members say he was a well-liked student and was an active member of JROTC.

Spencer was the fifth serviceman with Hawaii ties to have died in a “;non-combat-related incident”; this year. The Pentagon generally does not release details of these types of incidents.

The Air Force reported that Spencer's body is scheduled to arrive Sunday night at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
