Flanagan, Nichols fastest at Lanikai Triathlon

John Flanagan and Star-Bulletin reporter Katherine Nichols captured the men's and women's overall titles yesterday at the Jaco Rehab/Jamba Juice Lanikai Triathlon.

Flanagan won by nearly a minute over the next men's competitor. He finished the 500-meter swim, 20-kilometer bicycle course and 5K run in 56 minutes, 7 seconds.

Alexander Eiler was 50 seconds behind in second place, in 56:57. Tai Blechta (58:18) was third.

Nichols (1 hour, 1 minute, 37 seconds) beat second-place Rachel Ross (1:01:57) to the finish line by 20 seconds. Nichols trains with Ross, who is a past winner of the event.

Ingrid Rolles, another past winner, was third in the women's race, in 1:03:46.

'Iolani fires girls basketball coach

'Iolani girls basketball coach Marlene Zeug confirmed last night that she has been “;let go”; by the athletic department after just one season at the helm.

“;I guess 'Iolani wanted to go in a different direction. That's what they told me,”; said Zeug, who was called into the athletic office recently expecting to talk with administrators about the season, not a firing.

Zeug graduated from Punahou and assisted there before being hired by 'Iolani. She led the Raiders to a second-place finish in the Interscholastic league of Honolulu (9-5) despite the loss of three-time All-State forward Jamie Smith to graduation.

Wahine upend New Mexico State

Anja-Vanessa Peter and Alyssa Nafarrete won both singles and doubles matches yesterday to lead Hawaii to a 7-0 victory over New Mexico State at Las Cruces, N.M.

The Rainbow Wahine improved to 12-12 overall and finished 4-3 in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Aggies dropped to 10-12 and 4-4.

Team Aloha goes 3-2 at tournament

Team Aloha won three out of five games in the Arizona Elite girls basketball tournament at Arizona State University over the weekend.

The Hawaii girls all-star team beat the Spokane Stars Blue 52-38 and topped Team Concept Fire 40-28 before they lost to Spokane 39-25 in a rematch.

The loss sent the team to the consolation bracket, where they bounced back with a 48-37 win over Arizona Elite-Drake.

In their final contest, Team Aloha lost on a last-minute 3-pointer in overtime to Baden Elite.

Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann, who joined head coach Dana Takahara-Dias on the bench, said, “;Overall, I think we achieved our purpose, which was to expose our underclassmen to college scouts.

“;This year we decided to play in the aptly named all-star division, which features the very best teams from throughout the Western states. We played very well against the top club squads from Spokane, Phoenix, and Portland.”;

OIA White day at QB Club

The Honolulu Quarterback Club focuses on Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference basketball at today's luncheon. The boys and girls players and coaches of the year will be featured.

Star-Bulletin sports columnist Dave Reardon will be a featured speaker. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel's International Ballroom, with the program starting at noon.

Sea Warriors sweep Chaminade in softball

Courtney Kessell and Sherise Musquiz pitched Hawaii Pacific to a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade yesterday at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe.

Kessell (17-6) led the Sea Warriors to an 8-0 win in the first game. She went six innings and allowed three hits.

Krystal Plunkett led the offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Musquiz allowed three hits in three innings of a mercy-rule shortened 12-0 win in the second game.

Plunkett went 3-for-3 with a two-run home run for the Sea Warriors (38-10).

Casey Sugihara, who went 2-for-3 in the first game, added two hits and three runs in the second game.

Chaminade dropped to 9-36.
