Each year, the Honolulu Printmakers group organizes a members outing to a place that inspires art. Artists ruminate on what they've seen and produce a portfolio of prints based on the visit, then sell their works at the group's annual winter fundraiser. This year the artists took a tour of Iolani Palace. Last year they visited the Manoa Heritage Center.

The Printmakers decided to re-exhibit the Manoa works and found space on the walls of the Sub-Zero/Wolf Showroom, where top-of-the-line kitchen appliances are sold. The 20-print exhibit, “;Time & Place: Inspiration of the Manoa Heritage Center,”; is showing through May 16.

The center, tucked away in Manoa Valley, includes a heiau, native garden and historic home.

“;The center's a great site for inspiring art,”; says Margo Vitarelli, education director and sole employee of the center. She also happens to be an artist on the Printmakers board and has a piece in the show. “;You learn how individual interpretations are so diverse. Some artists produced works on the overall site; some focused on one motif. The mediums are different, too, but they're all a form of printmaking.”;

Vitarelli's screen-print, titled “;Under the Hau Tree,”; depicts a shady rest spot on a stone path at the center, where tours are conducted. (Call 988-1287 or e-mail manoaheritagecenter@ hawaiiantel.net.) Yellow blossoms adorn the tree, while orangey-red ones have dropped along the gray stone.

Hau blossoms unfurl yellow and fall to the ground only hours later in the deep orange hue, and Vitarelli said ancient Hawaiians associated the flower with the human spirit.

“;They symbolize life,”; she says. “;Life is short.”;
