Kailua earns bye in OIA playoffs

They don't win pretty.
The Kailua Surfriders just win in the clutch, as they did yesterday in scratching out a doubleheader split with Moanalua at Na Menehune's field. After losing the opener 4-3, Kailua rallied with three runs to tie the second game in the sixth inning before Alika Ramseyer-Ho belted an opposite-field two-run homer in the seventh to give the Surfriders an 8-6 win.
That also gave Kailua the edge in a three-way tie atop the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East baseball standings. Though Kailua, Moanalua and Kaiser all share 9-3 conference records, head-to-head play gives Kailua first place and a top seed in the playoffs. Kailua swept Kaiser earlier in the season, while Moanalua split with Kaiser.
“;We were lucky at the end,”; Kailua coach Corey Ishigo said. “;It's not easy to do, coming back against Moanalua. They don't make too many mistakes. Our guys never gave up.”;
Moanalua benefited by winning the opener with Kailua and secured second place. Kaiser gets the East's third seed. Moanalua athletic director Joel Kawachi confirmed the tiebreaker scenario after talking with league baseball coordinator Glenn Nitta.
The top two teams in the East get first-round byes in the playoffs, which begin on Tuesday.
“;Getting the bye is the key,”; Moanalua coach Scott Yamada said.
A sweep over Kailua would have given Moanalua outright first place in the Red East. It wasn't to be on a scorching-hot afternoon at Moanalua's manicured diamond.
Ramseyer-Ho, a sophomore, took the loss on the mound the first game but had plenty left in the tank for the second. In addition to his game-winning homer, he pitched two innings in relief for the win. Ramseyer-Ho fanned two, walked one and didn't allow a hit while Kailua rallied from a 6-3 deficit.
Kailua's hitters had moderate success against Moanalua's 6-4 side-armer, Dae Yang Kim, and southpaw Todd Takabuki.
Against relievers Jordan DePonte and Jacob Fukuyama, the visitors got hot. Tyson Lono's groundout with the bases loaded cut Moanalua's lead to 6-4 and Jared Iha followed with a two-out line drive to left, scoring Jared Matsumoto and Elia Lono to tie the contest.
In the seventh, Ryan McMonigle singled before Ramseyer-Ho connected with a hanging curveball from Fukuyama and sent it over the right-field fence roughly 340 feet away for Kailua—home team in the second game—to end it.
“;I was kind of hoping it was going out,”; Ramseyer-Ho said of the slicing drive.
Ishigo counted heavily on starting pitcher Bryson Gauthe, a senior who allowed four earned runs over five innings.
“;He did pretty good. He kept us in the game,”; Ishigo said. “;He's a bulldog.”;
Kailua (11-18) entered the weekend ranked No. 5 in the Star-Bulletin Baseball Top 10. Moanalua (17-12) is No. 9. Moanalua is now in the same playoff bracket with the state's No. 1 team, Pearl City, winner of the Red West.

Castle splits with Roosevelt
The Knights picked up a 3-2 win in Game 1 before the Rough Riders prevailed 3-1 in the second contest.
Castle's Seamus Yoneshige led the Knights in the first game with seven strikeouts in as many innings.

The top-ranked Chargers used a combined eight pitchers over two games to defeat the Hurricanes 11-3 and 5-0.
Pearl City's Jordan Oshiro led the Chargers in game one, hitting 3-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs.

Mililani sweeps Waianae
The Trojans' bats started off hot with a four-run first inning, then finished strong with a three-run sixth to edge the Seariders 8-7 in Game 1.
Mililani's offense remained hot in the nightcap, outscoring Waianae 13-9.
