Hawaii softball team sweeps SJSU

Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu smacked three home runs and Audrey Andrade went 4-for-8 with a grand slam to carry the Hawaii softball team in a doubleheader sweep over San Jose State in San Jose, Calif., yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (22-21, 10-5 Western Athletic Conference) took the series 2-1 over the Spartans (18-29, 5-10) with victories of 6-5 and 11-4.

In Game 1, pitcher Stephanie Ricketts posted her 20th complete game and held off a late SJSU charge by retiring six of seven batters to end the game. Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu launched two of her homers in the contest and Dara Pagaduan hit a solo shot.

Andrade broke Game 2 open in the third inning with her grand slam and went 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Fujikawa ahead by 7 at Mid-Pac

Moanalua High senior Tadd Fujikawa leads the 51st Mid-Pacific Open by seven strokes after yesterday's 3-under 69, giving him a three-day total of 12-under 204.

The defending champion can tie veteran David Ishii's event record of 17 under if he shoots 5 under in the final round today, and Fujikawa can become the first back-to-back champion at Mid-Pacific Country Club since 2004 if he holds on to win. The leaders tee off around 9 a.m.

Ishii, a three-time champion, trails Fujikawa by seven strokes at 5-under 211—the same margin he was behind the teenager last year entering the final day.

4 locals place in judo nationals

Four members of the Hawaii Tenri judo club wrapped up competition at the USA Judo Senior National Championships yesterday in San Diego.

Taylor Ibera (Farrington, 48 kilograms) and Mindy Chow (Punahou, 57 kg) took third place in their divisions, while Arnold Toriumi (Punahou, 60 kg) and Chrissy Chow (Punahou, 52 kg) placed fifth.

The event also served as a trial for advancement to the 2009 World Championships in The Netherlands, but judoka needed to win their division as the top seed or knock off the top-seeded competitor in a best-of-three match to advance.

HPU notches sweep of Chaminade

Hawaii Pacific University's softball team put up a combined score of 17-0 in a doubleheader sweep of Chaminade yesterday at Howard A. Okita Field in Kaneohe.

Sea Warriors pitcher Courtney Kessell (16-6) recorded her 400th career strikeout on her way to winning a mercy-shortened, 10-0 Game 1 for HPU (36-10, 18-4 PacWest). Sherise Musquiz (18-4) picked up the win in Game 2 as HPU triumphed 7-0.

Krystal Plunkett batted a combined 5-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Tajia Acierto added three RBIs to lead HPU at the plate.

Chaminade fell to 9-34 overall and 8-14 in league play.
