Wie closes with 71, ties for 36th

Honolulu's Michelle Wie closed with a 1-under 71 today to finish in a tie for 36th at the Lotte Mart Women's Open with a 54-hole total of 7-over 223 in the Korea of LPGA event.

Hee Kyung Seo won her first tournament of 2009 and seventh over the last 10 months with a three-day total of 6-under 210, edging Sun Ju Ahn and Il Hee Lee by one shot.

Wie, who earlier in the week withdrew from the pro-am because her caddie wasn't allowed to accompany her on the course, heads to Mexico next week to rejoin the regular LPGA Tour at the $1.3 million Corona Championship.

UH softball loses another close one

The Hawaii softball team lost another tough game last night, falling 5-4 at San Jose State.

The Rainbow Wahine surrendered four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap their five-game winning streak. Hawaii rallied with two runs in the seventh inning but fell short when Amanda Tauali'i flied out to right field with a pair of runners on base. Dara Pagaduan led Hawaii at the plate with three hits and three RBIs.

Hawaii (20-21, 8-5 WAC) plays San Jose State (18-27, 5-8) in a doubleheader today.

Warriors, Wahine split in tennis

The Hawaii men's tennis team split a pair of matches at Boise, Idaho, yesterday.

The Warriors dominated New Mexico State 6-1 but lost to No. 19 Boise State by the same score yesterday.

Sascha Heinemann was the only Hawaii player to win both singles matches yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine also split yesterday, bouncing back from a 6-1 loss to Fresno State to drop Idaho by the same score.

Hawaii swept the doubles matches against Idaho and earned sweeps from Sophia Kobuch, Anja-Vanessa Peter and Aglae Van den Bergh.

Melamed scores in Portugal

Dylan Melamed of Hanalei finished second in his heat of the ASP Estoril B! Pro Junior surfing contest yesterday in Portugal.

Melamed scored 9.73 points to finish second to Jayce Robinson (13.83) but ahead of Juan Merodio (9.67) and Ivo Cacao (6.60). Malamed is the only Hawaii surfer in the Grade II competition.

Swanson scores bronze medal

Melinda Swanson of Honolulu finished third in the 78-kg class at the USA Judo Senior Nationals last night.

Swanson, a two-time Pan Am team member, lost in a fight-off against Nina Cutro-Kelly of San Antonio, Texas. Toni Geier of Dumont, N.J., finished second.

BYUH close to Commissioner's Cup

Brigham Young-Hawaii is on the verge of winning its first Commissioner's Cup in the Pacific West Conference.

The Seasiders lead Hawaii Pacific 48.5 to 38 with defending champion UH-Hilo third with 37.5. Chaminade is last with 16.5 points.

The only way the Sea Warriors can overtake the Seasiders is if BYUH finishes last in golf on Tuesday. BYUH won championships in men's basketball, women's cross country, women's soccer, volleyball and women's tennis this season.
