Gov. releases funds for UH facilities

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $2,981,000 for improvements to women's locker rooms and Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawaii, according to a release from Lingle's office yesterday.

These projects are in addition to the $1.8 billion public infrastructure construction plan unveiled by Lingle last December.

“;University of Hawaii infrastructure improvements remain a priority as we work to create a world-class institution for learning, research and athletics,”; Lingle said. “;These projects will ensure comparable facilities for the women's athletic program and enhance training opportunities for the men's baseball team.”;

Fujikawa shares Mid-Pac lead

Defending champion Tadd Fujikawa shared the first-day lead at the Mid-Pacific Open with David Ishii and Michael Monaghan at 3-under 69 yesterday at the Mid-Pac Country Club.

Leland Lindsay was alone in fourth at 2-under 70 with another four tied for fifth at 1-under 71, including Kevin Hayashi and Beau Yokomoto in the professional flight. Doug Banks shot a 2-under 70 to lead the championship flight, with Mel Kiyuna (77) in first in the A flight and Keith Komatsubara and Joshua Mau sharing the lead in the B flight at 79.

Cartwright event today at grave

All baseball fans are invited to Oahu Cemetery this morning at 11 for a celebration of the life of Alexander Joy Cartwright.

Event organizer Lou Matlin and sportscasters Jim Leahey and Don Robbs are among those who will attend the annual event at Cartwright's grave site.

Hawaii athletes place at meets

Annett Wichmann placed second yesterday at the Mt. SAC Relays multi-events.

Wichmann won the javelin with a throw of 147 feet, 6 inches. She also placed sixth in the 800-meter run.

Her total of 5,334 will probably earn her a spot at the NCAA Championships for the fourth year in a row.

Sheppard placed fourth among 38 athletes with 4,769 points at the California Invitational multi-events. She finished third in the long jump.

Patacchia ousted from Rip Curl

Hawaii's Fred Patacchia defeated Kieran Perrow in his fourth-round heat yesterday at the Rip Curl Pro Bells at Bells Beach in Australia yesterday.

But Patacchia fell to Adam Robertson in the quarterfinals of the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour contest.

Joel Parkinson of Australia went on to beat Robertson in the final.
