An Oahu grand jury indicted Melvin Yoshida yesterday on a second-degree murder charge in the Easter Sunday shooting death of a neighbor.

The indictment also charges Yoshida, 70, with using a firearm to commit the crime.

He remains in custody at Oahu Community Correctional Center unable to post bail. His bail had been $100,000. At the state's request, Circuit Judge Derrick Chan increased bail yesterday to $500,000.

Police said Yoshida shot and killed Clare Silva, 54, in her first-floor apartment at Punchbowl Homes, a low-income public housing complex for seniors and disabled.

The Honolulu medical examiner said Silva bled to death from gunshot wounds.

Friends of Silva described Yoshida as a stalker who gave her gifts and made unwanted sexual advances.

When police arrested Yoshida, they said he admitted shooting Silva, whom he described as his girlfriend, and intended to shoot himself. The state said he also left a note.
