Sterling debut for Mid-Pac freshman
POSTED: Thursday, April 16, 2009
One of the youngest Mid-Pacific Owls picked the right time to take flight.
Freshman Winona Pauline delivered a complete-game win in her first start and scored the go-ahead run as No. 3 Mid-Pacific rallied past No. 7 Pac-Five 11-3 yesterday at Frear Softball Field. The game featured four homers, two by each squad.
The win gave MPI (6-2) a 1-0 record in second-round play of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. More importantly, Pauline's successful debut meant that Owls ace Keiki Carlos could take a much-needed break before today's first-round tiebreaker game with Pac-Five (5-3).
The teams finished the first round with matching 5-2 records, behind only 'Iolani. Today's winner at Ala Wai Community Park will seal second place and have an inside track to one of the ILH's state-tournament berths.
“;(Thursday's game) is our third game in four days,”; Owls coach William Quinn said. “;It's major critical.”;
The Owls knew that Pauline had the skills because of her performances at the ASA level. There is, though, nothing like first-start jitters.
“;She kept her composure. I told her not to show emotions,”; Quinn said. “;She can be emotional, but she did a good job.”;
Pac-Five had five hits, including two solo homers by Chante Tesoro, but couldn't string them together. Mid-Pac knocked Wolfpack ace Sheridan Mahelona out of the game in the fourth inning with six runs on seven hits.
“;I was nervous at first, but I remembered that I have a good defense behind me,”; Pauline said.
Pac-Five, which defeated MPI 6-4 in the first round, took a 1-0 lead in the second frame when Tatum Tokuda raced home from third on a wild pitch.
Pauline's double to left-center brought home her catcher, Kaydi Kochi, to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Pauline then came home when Tori Hamura singled to center and Tesoro's throw skidded to the backstop. That gave the Owls the lead for good.
Carlos and Kristin Yama had home runs for Mid-Pac.
