Question: Is there specific language I can add to my will to ensure my pets are cared for when I die?

Answer: You can set up a pet trust that makes your pets a beneficiary of money set aside for their care. The Hawaiian Humane Society offers a packet of information to get you started. Call 356-2213.

Be sure to discuss your wishes with whoever is to care for the pets after your death, to be sure the individual lives in a building that allows pets and can provide veterinarian care and proper guardianship.

Annual expenses for a young, healthy pet are about $900 for a cat; $1,200 for a dog. For a senior pet, $1,300 for a cat; $2,100 for a dog.
