Wahine teams ready for the beach

Hawaii will field four teams in Saturday's Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Riverside, Calif.

Stephanie Brandt and Elizabeth Ka'aihue make up one doubles team with Dani Mafua and Kanani Danielson another. The third Rainbow Wahine team has Amber Kaufman, Aneli Cubi-Otineru and Emily Maeda, while the fourth team is comprised of Brittany Hewitt, Cat Fowler, Jayme Lee and Sarah Prather.

Sydney Yogi (Punahou '07) is competing for one of the Texas teams.

Hawaii and Texas are two of the eight schools participating in the event, which is part of the Alt Games.

Beach volleyball is expected to become an NCAA women's sport for the 2010-11 school year.

Hawaii surfers advance at Bells

Hawaii surfers Fred Patacchia and Kekoa Bacalso advanced to the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach surf contest in Australia today.

Bacalso beat Drew Courtney in the third round in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour event.

Patacchia defeated Dean Morrison in his third-round heat.

Mina, Ikehara win medals

Branden Mina (Waipahu '07) and Kazden Ikehara (Kamehameha '07) won medals at the Greco-Roman Junior Nationals in wrestling last week.

Mina, a sophomore at Portland State, placed sixth in the 60-kilogram class.

Ikehara, a sophomore at Air Force, placed seventh in the 96-kg class.

Dixie State edges UHH in baseball

Dixie State sprinted out to a five-run lead and held off Hawaii-Hilo 5-4 in a baseball game yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.

Preston Grimes went seven innings and gave up four runs in the victory for the Red Storm (24-17).

Ronel Trias had three of the Vulcans' eight hits.

Hawaii-Hilo dropped to 18-17.

Walls is softball player of week

Chaminade sophomore Chelsi Walls is the PacWest player of the week in softball, the conference announced yesterday.

Walls went 2-1 in the pitcher's circle. She also hit .556 at the pate with two RBIs and dropped two sacrifice bunts.
