Kuldip Shergill Jr., an accounting major at Chaminade University, won first place and $400 in the spring 2009 Father Mackey Speech Competition. Michael Ersing, a humanities major, placed second and won $200, and Christopher Waiamau, a criminal justice and psychology major, took third and $100.

Wendy Humphrey, vice president of the Honolulu Association of Insurance Professionals, won a regional award in the National Association of Insurance Women Region VIII CWC-Communication Speak-Off Competition in Salt Lake City.

Castle Medical Center received the 'Oihana Maika'i (Endeavors of Excellence) Purple Lei Award, the highest award for organizational performance, from the Hawaii Award of Excellence program, administered through the American Society for Quality, Hawaii Section.
