Food drive looks for volunteers

The Hawaii Foodbank is still seeking volunteers for its 20th Annual Food Drive, to be held Saturday. In particular, help is needed at:

» Pearl City Shopping Center, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
» Town Center of Mililani, 2 to 4 p.m.
» Waiokeola Congregational Church, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
» Windward City Shopping Center, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The food bank is collecting donations from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at shopping centers and military locations across Honolulu. Most needed items include monetary contributions, canned meats or tuna, canned meals (spaghetti, chili, corned beef hash) and canned soup and vegetables.

Class spotlights Mexican cuisine

The Green House is hosting a Mexican-cuisine workshop on Saturday highlighting the use of fresh local ingredients. “;Cooking Revelations with Raul Mexico Lindo”; will feature recipes for handmade tortillas and local shrimp cocktail.

Winemaker pairs with Ruth's Chris

Ruth's Chris Steak House in Restaurant Row is launching its 2009 series of winemaker dinners with a visit by Ray Signorello Jr. at 6 p.m. Monday.

Signorello will pair his wines to the menu created by chef Kyle Yonashiro. The pairings include escargot in a mushroom cap with a garlic crostini, accompanied by Signorello Vineyards Chardonnay, Napa Valley 2005; lobster salad with local mixed greens and passion vanilla vinaigrette, served with “;Seta”; Semillion Blend, 2007; and Ruth's Chris Bone-In New York Strip Steak, haricots verts green beans almandine and truffle mashed potatoes, with Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005 and “;Padrone”; Bordeaux Blend, 2005. The meal ends with Chocolate Truffle Cake drizzled with raspberry sauce.

Yamaguchi vies to be 'Top Chef'

Chef Roy Yamaguchi will take part in cable channel Bravo's new series, “;Top Chef Masters,”; a spinoff of the popular “;Top Chef”; reality show. The program is scheduled to air on June 10.

The show will feature 24 chefs competing in quick-fire and elimination challenges for the first six episodes. In the last four, winners from previous weeks face off, with an elimination each week. The winning chef will receive $100,000 for his or her favorite charity.

Judges will be former food critic Gael Greene, former model Kelly Choi, Saveur magazine editor-in-chief James Oseland and writer Jay Rayner.

Nightmarket has Earth Day focus

Tonight's Nightmarket at Aloha Tower honors Earth Day with a savvy amalgamation of fashion, food, art, design, music, specialty retail, “;green”; products, food vendors and a full bar.

The featured nonprofit organization, Kanu Hawaii, hopes to boost efforts in preserving the islands. Fundraisers will include sales of art by the 13-member Groundup Movement and reusable shopping bags designed by Shoe Fly.

CM Honolulu and Ulupono Academy will present the fashion experiment “;WASTE”; and the YWCA Dress for Success will set up a swap shop.

'Lost' actor is now a proud papa

“;Lost”; star Josh Holloway is a father. The actor's publicist, Jill Fritzo, says Holloway's wife, Yessica, gave birth to a daughter, Java Kumala, on April 9 on Oahu. Fritzo didn't provide details.

This is the first child for the couple. They were married in 2004.

The 39-year-old Holloway has portrayed con man Sawyer on “;Lost”; since the ABC castaway drama debuted more than four years ago. The show films on location in Oahu.
