Wac chooses Wong as best of the week

Hawaii freshman outfielder Kolten Wong capped off an impressive four-game stretch by earning the Western Athletic Conference hitter of the week award yesterday.

Wong went 12-for-18 with two homers, seven runs and 10 RBIs as the Rainbows went 2-2 last week. Wong had two stolen bases and recorded his team-leading fourth outfield assist in a win over Santa Clara during the week.

He followed it up with a 10-for-15 performance in three games at Nevada over the weekend, belting his team-leading sixth and seventh home runs for the season. He also leads the team with 44 hits, 30 runs scored and eight stolen bases, and is second with a .336 batting average.

Hawaii went 2-2 in those four games and fell out of this week's Baseball America top 25 poll. The Rainbows (21-12, 4-3) host Sacramento State for a four-game series at Les Murakami Stadium beginning Friday.

Bacalso still alive at Bells Beach

Kekoa Bacalso of Hawaii won his heat to move into the second round of the Rip Curl Pro Bells at Australia yesterday.

Bacalso scored 15.60 points to top Jeremy Flores (13.47), Dean Morrison (13.10) and Nic Muscroft (10.17). He will surf against Drew Courtney of Australia in the next round.

Fred Patacchia of Hawaii is still in the first round and wil surf his heat today.

Rodgers helps Hilo to baseball win

Peter Rodgers drove in four runs and Kekoa Lee pitched into the sixth inning to lead the UH-Hilo baseball team over Dixie State 10-7 at Wong Stadium in Hilo yesterday.

Jeff Jones pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to close the door and earn his first save for the Vulcans.

UH-Hilo improved to 16-15 with the win while Dixie State dropped to 22-15.
