Hawaii cheerleaders win division

University of Hawaii seniors Kristin Kowalkowski and Kelvin Lam won the partner stunt division at the National Cheerleaders Association's Collegiate Cheer Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday.

The Hawaii duo scored 9.69 points to edge a team from Louisville by .02 points. It is the school's first national title in that organization. Paul Groom and Jodi Olerking won the title for Hawaii at the Universal Cheerleaders Association national championships in 1995.

Hawaii's Amanda Lucero and George McGuire scored 9.01 points to take fifth place.

Hawaii Pacific had five teams in the tournament, finishing in fourth, ninth, 11th, 14th and 15th.

Sea Warriors beat Vulcans in tennis

Hawaii Pacific's women's tennis team swept three doubles matches to beat UH-Hilo 5-1 yesterday in Hilo.

The Sea Warriors, who finished second in the Pacific West Conference tournament at Hilo last week, clinched the victory over the Vulcans when Zora Vicova swept Eve Castaing 6-0, 6-2 and Nina Mihova beat Nicole Campbell 6-3, 7-5.

Hawaii Pacific improved to 15-7 for the season and defended its No. 15 national ranking.

The Sea Warriors will wait to learn if they will make it into the NCAA Regional Championship May 7-9, but they are ranked No. 2 in the region and expect to play on.

» Nikola Petrov, Hendrik Bode and Anton Samuilau won singles matches and the HPU men's squad beat UH-Hilo 5-1 in the regular-season finale yesterday in Kona.

The Sea Warriors improved to 13-4 and are ranked No. 1 in the West region and No. 5 in the nation. They also await word on the NCAA regional.

UH-Hilo throws scare into HPU

The UH-Hilo women's softball team dealt Hawaii Pacific a rare loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Kaneohe yesterday, but the Sea Warriors came back to win the second game.

Amber Waracka earned the win over HPU's Courtney Kessell for the Vulcans to win the first game 2-1 with a five-hitter. Waracka also pitched the second game, but the Sea Warriors scored three runs to win 3-1.

Sherize Musquiz earned the win for HPU while Casey Sugihara drove in a pair of runs.

HPU (34-10, 16-4 PacWest) next plays Chaminade on Saturday at home. The Vulcans are off until April 25.
