Nevada thumps UH pitching in split

Nevada scored in double figures for the third straight game against No. 23 Hawaii and handed the Rainbows their first series loss since the beginning of the season with a 10-5 victory in the second game of yesterday's baseball doubleheader at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev.

The Wolf Pack (16-17, 5-2 Western Athletic Conference) took over sole possession of the league lead, battling back to win the series after Hawaii (21-12, 4-3) won 13-11 to complete a game that started Friday before being suspended due to rain.
Kolten Wong went 10-for-15 with two homers and nine RBIs in the series, which was shortened to three games. Because the majority of Friday's game was moved to yesterday due to bad weather, the second game of yesterday's originally scheduled doubleheader was not played and there are no plans to make it up.
Offense was hardly the problem for the 'Bows this weekend, as the Wolf Pack roughed up Hawaii for 35 runs in three games. Nick Melino had a huge day, going 6-for-7 with a home run and eight RBIs in the doubleheader as the Wolf Pack finished with 47 hits in three games.
“;This whole series was 100 percent on me,”; Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. “;I didn't have our guys ready to pitch. Every pitch I called was a struggle and pretty much every move I made backfired. This wasn't on our kids, this was on me. I've got to do a better job of coaching.”;
Matt Sisto (4-2) gave the 'Bows a solid effort in the first game yesterday. Hawaii started with a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the second inning, and the Wolf Pack got to Sisto for three runs in the third to tie the game at 7.
Nevada led 8-7 in the fourth, but Sisto put up zeros the next three innings. Greg Garcia and Wong stroked RBI singles and Vinnie Catricala had an RBI double as part of a four-run seventh that put Hawaii up 12-8.
Shaun Kort's double with one out in the eighth put runners on second and third and chased Sisto, who went 6 1/3 innings. Josh Slaats came on in relief and the Wolf Pack pulled to 12-11 before he got out of the inning.
Wong added an insurance run in the ninth with a solo home run and Slaats closed it out in the bottom of the inning to earn his fourth save.
“;Slaats had a great look in his eye. He did a nice job,”; Trapasso said. “;Sisto kept us in it by not walking guys.”;
Junior Nate Klein (0-2) made his first start in nearly a month in the second game, allowing four runs over three innings. Solo home runs by Sean Montplaisir and Landon Hernandez made the score 4-2, when Jared Alexander—who pitched an inning on Friday before the game was postponed—came on in relief. Alexander allowed four runs in one inning on Friday and didn't fare much better yesterday, surrendering five runs on six hits in two innings as the Wolf Pack took a 10-3 lead.
“;After the game today I told our guys there's nothing you can learn from a pitching performance like we had,”; Trapasso said. “;The best thing you can do is forget about it, go home and try to work on some things and pitch better.”;
Hawaii returns home today to prepare for a four-game series against Sacramento State (20-13, 1-3) beginning Friday at Les Murakami Stadium.
