OIA standouts headline QB luncheon

Standout OIA Red Conference boys and girls basketball players and coaches are slated to appear at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Wes Nakama of the Honolulu Advertiser will present the players and coaches of the year.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel. The program follows at noon.

 

Escalante selected for boxing camp

Waimanalo's Bruno Escalante Jr. has been invited to attend an amateur boxing camp at the Olympic Traning Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Escalante, a 2005 Kailua High graduate, is ranked No. 2 in the nation and won the 2008 National Police Athletic League championship in the 112-pound weight class.

 

Seasiders take PacWest tennis crown

Brigham Young-Hawaii took two doubles and three singles matches in a 5-2 victory over Hawaii Pacific to earn the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Women's Tennis Championship yesterday in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island.

Yuan Jia of the Seasiders was named the tournament's most valuable player after teaming with Elwen Li in a doubles victory over the Sea Warriors' Zora Vickora and Ingred Cseh. Jia also won her singles match, beating Nina Mihova 6-1, 6-0.

Later in the day, Hawaii-Hilo defeated Chaminade 5-1 to finish the tournament in third place.

» Hawaii Pacific defeated Hawaii-Hilo 8-1 in a men's tennis match yesterday at Hilo to improve to 12-4.

Nikola Petrov, Hendrik Bode, Daniel Luedi and Sebastian Bader all won singles and doubles matches for HPU.

UHH's No. 1 doubles team of Laurent Colombo and Kevin Tamura won their match for the Vulcans' only point.

 

Chaminade sweeps BYUH in softball

Chaminade defeated Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday in both ends of a softball doubleheader, 7-5 in 11 innings and 3-2, at Laie.

Shalin Yamaguchi and Chelsi Walls led Chaminade (9-32, 8-12 PacWest) in the first game with three hits each.

Chasity Senas had two hits for the Silverswords in the second game.

The Seasiders dropped to 13-27 and 6-16.
