State getting $6.5M to gird for disasters

The state will receive more than $6.5 million to strengthen preparedness for natural disasters and other emergencies under a federal grant announced Wednesday.
The grants from the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, include $5 million to the State Civil Defense Division for protection of port infrastructure and $22,500 to Island Petroleum for port security on Maui and Molokai.
The allocations announced by FEMA also include:
» $250,000 to state Civil Defense to support emergency operations centers.
» $833,717 to improve the reliability and accuracy of personal identification documents issued by the state.
» $200,000 to secure critical infrastructure projects such as chemical facilities, power plants and dams.
» $282,595 for training and equipment to improve interagency communications during natural disasters and other emergency events.
